It’s officially July! Which means it is social wellness month! Social wellness is the capability to interact with those around you. It includes using good communication skills, having meaningful relationships, respecting yourself and others and building a support system which includes family members and friends.

Last Wednesday, we took the @ywcacentralcarolinas students to @centralpiedmontcc to see Madagascar. The students have been learning about the character trait of courage and how it's associated with the lion in literature. After the play, we helped them create their own unique lion masks with vibrant colors and decorative manes.

This week's Promoting Peace Program classes were 🔥🔥🔥 🤩
Our students made tesserae mosaics with artist Tom Thoune and our partners at Arts+The Bridge. Guest speakers CMPD officers Hooven and Reyes engaged with students by providing helpful information, inspirational stories and meaningful life-lessons learned through their experiences. On Wednesday, former officer, turned professional counselor, Kareem Puranda, provided strategies for envisioning success and formulating goals for the future. Today’s speaker, photographer and visual artist Shan Wallace's (@_yoshann) shared her motivational story of becoming the successful photographer and artist she is today and how students can control and create their own reality. Thanks to all for your sharing time, talent and words of wisdom!

Last Thursday, July 18, The Arts Empowerment Project had it’s Promoting Peace Program’s Art Exhibit Opening Reception at the Projective Eye Gallery at UNC Charlotte Center City. We would like to thank Adam Justice, Director of Galleries UNC Charlotte College of Arts + Architecture for organizing the exhibit and starting a great partnership between UNC Charlotte and TAEP! Thanks to his hard work, the exhibit will remain open until July 31st, 2019.
Adam Justice, Director of Galleries at UNC Charlotte Center City, started off the reception by speaking about art’s power to create conversation and connect communities, in which helps promote a more positive future. He also stated how he was proud to be partnering with TAEP for this cause and would have further collaboration in future events.
Natalie Allen, executive director of TAEP, explained the importance of Promoting Peace and how it breaks down stereotypes that the youth and officers may have or each other. She explained that though art we can achieve positive interactions and a different mindset.
Youth, officers and artists who were part of Promoting Peace attended the program. Recognition was given to outstanding participants, and murals from past Promoting Peace Programs were displayed. It was a great evening and we cannot wait until next year’s program!

We have more excellent news! Huge thanks to WCNC Charlotte for their amazing coverage of our Promoting Peace Program. And thank you to WCNC Charlotte’s reporter, Emma Korynta for helping shine a light on our team and our partners at CMPD, TYM Inc. She excellently describes our collaborative program, which helps build healthy relationships and trust with art as our platform. We are grateful to our donors, as well as the Arts & Science Council’s Cultural Vision Grant award, which made this program possible.
“The Promoting Peace Program really helps kids and officers come together in a positive way over art,” said Natalie Allen, the founder and CEO of the Arts Empowerment Project. “There’s a lot of stereotypes that are built around both groups, and we want to break down those stereotypes, and I feel like art is a wonderful vehicle to do it”
